The basic interface is meant for use by third parties who wander into the website investigating unusual traffic. The interface is simple to use and gives a set of results with a definitive call-to-action. A user specifies the exact flow that he is investigating, and the basic version of the interface responds with the list of slices that generated such flows along with their contact addresses.
To use this interface, use the following steps:
- The node IP () corresponds to the IP address of a PlanetLab node. This is likely the same as the source IP address of the flow in question. Please make sure that the address is in the right format (dotted numbers without any other punctuation). DNS names are not supported in this field for obvious reasons.
- The source and destination IP addresses () can be specified precisely, or using wildcards:
- 80,110,25 - A set of 3 ports
- 0-1024,33456 - A set of 1026 ports
- etc.
- Specify the destination IP address (). Knowing this address usually narrows down the results significantly. The destination IP need not be specified exactly. It may be specified using one of the following wildcards:
- 1.2.3.x meaning that the 4th octet can take any value between 0 and 255
- 1.2.3-10.5 meaning that the 3rd octet can take a value between 3 and 10
- 1.2.0.0/16 the usual definition of a subnet
- 1.2.3.5,7,9 the set of addresses 1.2.3.5, 1.2.3.7 and 1.3.7.9
- Specify the protocol, or a combination of protocols ()
- Specify the start and end times (). These are specified in the form: 2008/8/22 (meaning the of August 2008) or in the extended form, 2008/8/22:17 (meaning the of August 2008, 5pm).
